Sue Kelley has been a physiotherapist for 30 years. She is a Specialist Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, one of a handful in Australia. This qualification is based on extensive experience, expertise and past research. Sue has two masters of physiotherapy qualifications. Her main area of interest is spinal pain. She is an expert in treating and managing pain. Her research masters was conducted on the back muscle multifidus and she tested the effect of stability retraining on patients who had undergone a laminectomy.
She worked as a Senior Physiotherapist at the Mater Public Hospital in South Brisbane. During this time, she worked with many specialist doctors and gained valuable practical experience. Whilst at the Mater she worked at The Back Stability Clinic. This landmark clinic paved the way for the use of real time ultrasound as an educational tool in the training of the stability muscles of the spine. Sue regularly uses real time ultrasound to assist patients in the retraining of their transversus abdominis, multifidus and pelvic floor muscles. Sue has taught this skill to physiotherapists from around the world as part of the teaching staff at the University of Queensland.
Sue also conducted a trial of the possible cause of arm pain following mastectomy. One in ten women develop breast cancer and a percentage of the patients go on develop post-mastectomy arm pain. Sue continues to have a strong interest in this area.
Sue has also worked with local sporting teams including the Taringa Rovers Soccer Club, the UQ Women’s AFL and the UQ Women’s Rugby team. She is an active runner, has completed numerous marathons and this personal interest has led to a high level of insight into the treatment of running related issues. Recently she has been enjoying rowing and if you can’t find her on the water, she will be at Cylinder beach.
